15 partners (automobile manufacturers, providers of hydrogen and technology, international energy experts) have come together in this project. Their goals were:
- Bring 185 fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) from automotive companies (BMW, Daimler, Honda, Hyundai, and Toyota) on Europe’s roads.
- Build the corresponding hydrogen infrastructure: In the three clusters (London, Copenhagen, Cluster South with Bozen, Innsbruck, Munich and Stuttgart) six new refuelling stations (London 3, Copenhagen 2, Innsbruck 1) were built, which complement the already existing 12 stations of Air Products , Linde, OMV, ITM Power and Copenhagen Hydrogen Network.
The aim of the project was to prepare the participating innovative regions for the market launch of fuel cell vehicles (2015-2018).
The Institute for Innovative Technologies (IIT Bozen) has played an important role within the HyFIVE project: its main activities included the provision of the hydrogen filling station at the Hydrogen Centre in Bolzano as well as the management of a fleet of ten fuel cell vehicles, which are available to private and corporate customers for long term rental. IIT also acted as coordinator for the towns of Bolzano, Innsbruck, Stuttgart and Munich within the project and took care of the development of know-how and knowledge transfer regarding hydrogen technology.
