Using this technology is one way of making public transport sustainable, as it reduces noise and CO2 emissions as well as pollution. Therefore, these buses are attractive especially to the population in urban areas who are exposed to high levels of emissions.
In contrast to other sustainable technologies, fuel cell buses have the same range and refuelling time as conventional buses and can therefore completely replace the latter without having to compromise on performance, operational flexibility and productivity.
The project partner in South Tyrol is SASA which will buy and operate these buses. In the beginning, the new fuel cell buses will circulate only in Bozen/Bolzano; however, thanks to the LIFEalps project a further hydrogen refuelling station will be installed in Meran/Merano where these zero emission buses will be operated in the future, too.
IIT is an associated project partner and will provide "green" hydrogen as well as the necessary refuelling infrastructure.
